PASTOR'S CORNER

It is hard to believe that the Easter season is upon us. Easter seems so early this year. Some of us are hardly finished putting away our Christmas decorations.

In fact, it will not be until the year 2160 that Easter will be celebrated this early again. The date for Easter ranges from March 22 to April 25. Simply put, it is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.

Early or late, Easter is the most important date in the Christian calendar. It is the day of our Lord's resurrection. It is the day we celebrate God's victory over sin and death.

I hope you will be part of our Easter celebration at Lewistown Presbyterian Church. On Palm Sunday (March 16) we will be receiving our confirmation class into membership. On Maundy Thursday (March 20) our evening worship will begin at 7:30 pm and will include communion. On Easter morning, in addition to our 10:30 am service, we will have a 7:00 am sunrise service followed by breakfast at the church.

LENT

During the Lenten Season, Carol’s and my memories go back to Western Pennsylvania, to the small red brick church which was, and is, known as the Tyrone Presbyterian Church which was organized in the year 1772. It takes its name from the township in Fayette County where it is located. It was my home church which, in an act of desperation, asked me to be their student pastor. Carol and I traveled from Pittsburgh each weekend. I preached at the morning service on Sunday and stayed through the afternoon. In the evening we led the youth group which was known as The Westminster Fellowship. The ten dollars remuneration per week that we received paid for our gasoline and an occasional meal on the road. Sunday night found us returning to Pittsburgh. Monday morning called me to classes at Western Theological Seminary and Carol to her secretarial employment in the city.

Inspiration flowed generously from the professors, classes and classmates at the seminary. This experience motivated us to produce the Easter Story in pictures and songs at the church which we served. I borrowed an Argus C-3 35 mm camera from my brother, Frank, and we purchased a reel to reel tape recorder. These devices would provide the sight and sound of the biblical story. False hair and spirit gum were found in a theatrical supply store on Penn Ave, Pittsburgh. Bed sheets, blankets and bath robes were used for costumes. Soon the kids were transformed into the characters of the passion story. Admittedly, the fifteen year old school girl did not quite present the picture of a rough Roman Centurion. One of the boys, who had been the best man at our wedding, was the unanimous choice to play the part of Jesus. A local farmer's pony reluctantly carried our "Jesus" for the triumphal entry scene.

So much for personnel; then we turned our attention to the scenery. The road was no problem because it remained unpaved for the next forty years. A cement enclosed water spring became the tomb when covered by a cardboard "stone" which could be rolled away at the appropriate time. The Golgotha scene presented somewhat of a problem. But, behind the church was a field rimmed by a series of pit holes from an old coal mine. There is where we placed the cross for the crucifixion scene.

The whole photo session took a little over an hour. We returned to the church and recorded the appropriate hymns for each scene. With a lot of trial and error, the slides and tape were matched to each other to provide the program. All in all it was a most meaningful and inspirational learning experience for all the participants and viewers.

The rest of the story took place after Easter. Some people from a local town, driving past the field behind the church, saw the cross and began to worry that some social statement, perhaps prejudicial, was being made.

Crosses may be seen everywhere today. We see them on hilltops, on church buildings, and worn as jewelry by heroes and villains alike. But for Christians there is never a question about the meaning of the cross. It is the symbol of God's love, and the promise of eternal life.

"For we preach Christ crucified….to some a stumbling block and foolishness. But to them that are called, Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God." I Corinthians 1:23, 24

Stewardship Committee

Elders Violet Miller and Jean Burlew gave the following report of the January Presbytery meeting:
  • A proposed amendment to the first “Overture” to change approval from a 2/3 super majority to s simple majority was defeated, so the motion as introduced by the AUT was approved.

  • On the second “Overture” the presbytery agreed to take no action on the overture from the Curwensville and Clearfield session which was primarily asking for at least a two year period of study before our form of government would be changed from what they call a “regulatory polity” to a “missional polity.”

  • The third “overture” from the AUT of Huntingdon Presbytery was voted on and will be sent to the 218th General Assembly of 2008 regarding ordination standards—specifically ordination of homosexuals.

  • Altoona Broad First name changed to Providence Presbyterian Church

  • Anne Ard gave an interesting presentation on sexual misconduct in the church. It was indicated that Lewistown Presbyterian had a “model” policy on this matter.

A Musical Comedy "Hold That Thought"

Unfortunately, planning three dates on one evening is not the best idea; you see, middle-aged men simply can't keep to a schedule unless they've had a nap first! With the help of her friend, she puts each of her men on hold and runs to the next. You'll think of Lucy and Ethel, as you watch them juggle their problems, and by the end, they'll have a lot of 'splaining to do! Lots of frantic fun and loads of laughter

Sign up now for a great time at Krislund.

Leave the Screen; Play in the Green

"My child is not the outdoors-type. He/she would rather watch TV or play their video games than mess around in the woods." Many experts agree: the disconnect between children and nature is growing wider and deeper. That is too bad considering the positive impact of God’s creation on concentration, self-confidence, and environmental sensitivity. Even more importantly, God’s creation ignites spiritual interest and growth. Join us this summer.

Lithuanian Christian College - LCC

Friends,

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we bring you greetings for a new year from Klaipeda, Lithuania.

We’re sure many of you can understand when we ask, where did 2007 go? The year just seemed to fly by. As always, it was a year filled with joys and challenges. We have just finished Eric’s seventh and Becky’s sixth year of teaching at Lithuania Christian College. We calculate we have had over 2,500 students between us over these years—what a blessing! And a lot of homework to grade!

Lithuanian Christian College has a new name--LCC International University.

When we look back at the transformations that have taken place in LCC, Lithuania, our students, and in us, we are amazed at what God has done. Who could have imagined that this tiny new school in a former Soviet republic could grow to 600 students from 21 countries? In 2007, Lithuania Christian College changed its name to LCC International University to better reflect our mission to the international Christian community in this part of the world.

As you may know, Lithuania joined the European Union in 2005. EU accession seems to have had as large an impact as the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. Emigration was much larger than originally anticipated. Mostly younger, educated people have migrated to England and Ireland. As a result, the LCC student body has changed from predominantly Lithuanian to a more mixed Eastern European population. Over half of our students are now ethnic Russians. More students are coming from Belarus, Ukraine, and the so-called "stan" countries. This diversity is both a blessing and a challenge.

We have been blessed with many bright young men and women from these countries, but they have diverse traditions and come from different experiences and backgrounds. We face the challenge in the classroom to make this a meaningful and contextual educational experience for them. We need to understand and respect their traditions and equip them to become the leaders of their communities and churches when the temptation is there for continued emigration.

The change in its student body has brought financial challenges to LCC. Typically, students from the eastern countries require scholarships and assistance in travel and visa applications. In September 2007, LCC opened its first residence dorm on campus (we now have three buildings). But more international students means more housing is needed. A second new dorm will be needed within five years.

Our great privilege has been to work at LCC under the leadership of President Jim Mininger. Jim and his wife Virginia have been at the foundation of LCC for the past 13 years. LCC would not be the place it is today without their devotion, dedication, and love. Jim and Virginia will be retiring in June 2008. LCC is currently in the search process for a new president. We would ask that you keep LCC, its board, and its extended family in your prayers during this time of changing leadership.  2007 was a busy year for us. We taught the spring term at LCC. At the end of April, LCC graduated 97 students. In May we went to Moscow to teach in the summer session at RACU (Russian American Christian University). In June, we flew directly from Moscow to Pennsylvania in the summer in order to do our mid-term interpretation assignment in the United States and to have chance to visit with many of you.

Our stay reminded us we are a relational church, and this was a time of renewed friendships. We do mission not alone, but as a church in Christ’s name. We would not be able to do this work without

you. People tend to ask to hear about our part of the story, but it is just that, one part. You are just as integral a part as we are. Our teaching commitments did not allow us to stay in the United States for the PC(USA) Mission Challenge ’07, which took place in October, but we were able to meet with many church mission committees and with the presbytery executives of Donegal Presbytery and Carlisle Presbytery. This gave us an opportunity to share the work we do and to be clear about the financial needs of world mission.

In August we returned to Lithuania to start a new semester full of bright faces and shiny promises. The time just flew by, and before we knew it, it was time for the annual LCC Christmas pageant. (Eric plays a great king.) We start the spring 2008 semester on January 14. Eric is teaching a new course in political economy for 45 students and has spent much researching, reading, and preparing for it. Students are inquisitive and demanding—they want to know not just what, but why and how. We are anticipating a mission trip by the First Presbyterian Church in Warren, Pennsylvania (where Eric grew up) this coming June. Twelve members will visit and we are busily working on arrangements and tasks with Christie Leininger and their mission committee. This delegation will get a chance to meet our students and get a hands-on feel for our week. And we’re sure the weather will be great!

We continue our work at the prison. We will make a visit this coming Saturday and look forward to seeing these young men again. For several of the men, we are their only regular visitors. Visiting is not always a comfortable task, but one we feel called to. This work always puts all our other work, and indeed our lives, into greater perspective.

So, 2007 is done, and we have ushered in 2008. Our hope and prayer for each of you is one of Christ’s peace and blessings.  We thank you for all your love, prayers, and continuing support. Peace and blessings,

Eric and Becky Hinderliter
